Hi Gary
At Waitaki DC we currently charge for Flow ($/L/s - i.e. consumption of reticulation capacity), BOD ($/kgBOD/d - i.e. consumption of treatment capacity at WWTP) and monitoring where the discharge quality requires it. _________________ Oscar Smit

Hi Oscar
Do your major Industries pre treat? if so the conversion of BOD to solids would potentially have a large cost savings.
If memory serves me right Oamaru uses oxidation pond treatment system ?
My question is; the solids which eventually need to be desludge from the ponds could become a very expensive operation, therefore does this charging structure actually fairly incur cost onto the domestic consumer/industrial consumer? |

Hi Gary
Sorry, never went back to my post so have only just seen your questions.
We have one major industry which does pretreat - and yes they make significant savings as a result. Oamaru uses oxidation ponds followed by overland treatment and then wetlands.
We are contemplating the option of disposing of sludge within the site (plough in) to minimise costs - will require ORC buy-in and consent of course. _________________ Oscar Smit

Waipa will be including TKN and TP as charges for this financial year, which is on top of cBOD5, TSS and volume.
The proposed fees are currently out for submissions but will be included in the current or altered form from June 2010. _________________ Jared Hansen BSc.
